Now this is a model train set. The Lionel Polar Express Train Set, based on the award-winning book "Polar Express" and on the animated Christmas movie featuring Tom Hanks in 2004, can be described as one of the best movie-based train sets available. Of course, nearly the entire movie was set on the Polar Express train, so that's a big advantage right there for one of Lionel's best-selling model train sets - they actually ran out of stock right after they released the model to the market.
The Lionel Polar Express Train is chock-full with exquisite detail and superb craftsmanship. The die-cast metal steam locomotive puffs smoke and blows a realistic-sounding whistle, plus it also has a working headlight. It is powered by electric current and controlled by an easily operated transformer that allows it to go forwards and backwards. The locomotive pulls a coal tender, two coach passenger cars, and an observation car. Each car has interior lighting and one can even see silhouettes of people in the windows. Four figurines of characters from the movie - with moveable heads, arms, waists, and legs - are also included along with 40 x 60 inches of railroad track.
Children Die-Cast Vehicles
This is an "O Gauge" model train, so the train cars are large enough to be handled quite safely by small hands, making this a good gift for a child - 8 years and above is the recommended age. Assembly is easy, but care must be taken during operation - adult supervision is still recommended for children who may become curious about what makes the train run and to keep the figurines from being sampled by inquisitive mouths. The different parts are durable enough to withstand use and abuse by a child.
The Lionel Polar Express Train Set is not a cheap Christmas gift. However, it can be seen as a worthwhile investment given the sheer quality and durability of the entire model train set. This is a must have for railroad model enthusiasts and fans of the movie alike, and this can also be used as a good starter set for a budding railroad model hobbyist. This train set gets a 10 out of 10.
